What’s the future like for Ryan Reynolds?

That’s the question being asked after the mega-flop that is Green Lantern….

Read my Green Lantern review by clicking the image above

So what of Ryan Reynolds’?  People Magazine’s Sexiest man alive had been poised for superstardom since charming audiences as Sandra Bullock’s assistant in The Proposal, and Green Lantern was to be his official promotion into the big leagues. Does Lantern‘s performance and underwhelming reception ruin his breakout moment, or merely postpone it? Though a few critics despised his nonchalance in the role, many of Lantern‘s harshest detractors excused Reynolds from the wreckage. “He’s the soul of likability,” according to Entertainment Weekly “Mr. Reynolds isn’t wrong for the job; the movie is,” ruled the New York Times.

Several experts agreed that Reynolds should use his superpowers in comedy, a genre he conveniently tackles next in The Change Up (a film where he and the brilliant Jason Bateman switch bodies). “Though he’s not able to harness the emerald energy of willpower to save Green Lantern from destruction, he’s also not at fault for the disaster,” said The Slate. “He’s so good-looking that no one realizes how funny he is. Used in the right roles, Ryan Reynolds could develop into a comic actor with the timing of a Paul Rudd and the body of a… slightly hunkier Paul Rudd.”

Rudd is a good comparison, as is Vince Vaughn, who was once a star in the tolerable Jurassic Park follow-up The Lost World. All three actors worked tirelessly in supporting roles in a variety of genres before Hollywood finally recognized the obvious and built comedies around them. I don’t think Green Lantern ruins Reynolds’ hope for action-hero stardom but if its frosty reception gives him reason to retreat to more comedic roles, the universe would definitely be a funnier place.

No Hellboy Three

EVER…..apparently…

bye…

Not really a suprised but still sad to hear actual confirmation never the less, Mike Mignola says that it’s extremely unlikely Guillermor del Toro will ever return to Hellboy.

Problems for Hellboy have been reported many times before, with del Toro saying that the production and writing processes were tough, and Big Red himself Ron Perlman saying “He’s doing Sons Of Anarchy without make-up. He’s spoiled!” The key statement was probably the director’s heartfelt “I know how it ends and I don’t know if I want to see that ending,” but he did say that he “would love to do it”.

Speaking in Calgary though, Mignola answered the questions by saying he can’t imagine it ever happening saying “I love Guillermo; he’s cute! But in every interview there’s a new story on what his next movie is, and he honestly believes he’s going to do them all. Last I heard, he said ‘I’m never gonna get back to Hellboy’. I’m not surprised, because he won’t live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he’s told me he’s going to make”.

So we won’t be treated to another visit with Hellboy and Liz’ twins, and no Beast of the Apocalypse shenanigans, at least on te big screen.

Mignola has always said that he was ambivalent about the films concluding before his comics did. “If del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get there” .

Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortenson star in A Dangerous Method Trailer

Fassbender and Mortenson star as Jung and Freud in this David Cronenberg feature

This is Cronenberg’s first film since Eastern Promises and it’s shaping up to be worth the wait. The birth of psychoanalysis and Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud’s often bitter rivalry drive a narrative that also focuses on a damaging love triangle with the brittle, beautiful Sabina (Keira Knightley).

The movie is adapted from The Talking Cure, a stage play by Atonement writer Christopher Hampton. Hampton’s deft hand at period drama married with Cronenberg’s unique vision and a gifted cast should make it required viewing.

A Dangerous Method hits UK theatre’s on February 10

Joaquin Phoenix set to star as a pimp opposite Marion Cotillard

Pair to star in James Gray’s “Low Life”….

Pimping ain't eazy....

Well now Phoenix has left his confusing faux-rap career behind…..he can focus on acting full time, and for his next project he has chosen to reunite with “Two Lovers” director James Gray for his new film “Low Life”.

Hurt Locker/The Avengers actor Jeremy Renner is also expected to join the cast. Cotillard will play a Polish woman attempting to emigrate to the US. While sailing to Ellis Island, her sister grows ill and she is forced to trade sexual favours to keep her alive. Warned to keep quiet about what has happened, she is given immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals. Vulnerable, she falls prey to Phoenix’s character, who manipulates her onto the game in New York.

I’m guessing production on this won’t be starting until next year what with Cotillard currently filming “The Dark Knight Rises”, Renner filming “The Avengers” and Joaquin Phoenix soon to be busy with “The Master”

Woody Allen Announces Bop Decameron Cast….

Woody Allen is also set to star in his next film…..

heading to rome…

The writer/director/actor has officially announced the cast for his latest film titled “Bop Decameron” which is the story about a husband and wife travelling to rome to meet the man their daughter plans to marry.

So the cast in full, then: Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, with co-stars Antonio Albanese, Fabio Armiliata, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ornella Muti, Flavio Parenti, Alison Pill, Riccardo Scamarcio and Alessandro Tiberi.

They’re due to start filming next month although the film is yet to find a distributor or get an official release date.

Nicolas Winding Refn & Ryan Gosling to team up again

The Director – Actor Team are set for yet another collaboration, this time a New York set RomCom…

It seems Refn and Gosling have become inseperable, with the soon to be released Drive followed by Logan’s Run the two have made sure they’ve been working together for some time. But it seems that this is not enough as Refn announced plans to work on “a romantic comedy set in New York, which seems like a great place to start.”

Gosling has a lot of projects coming up at the minute (Crazy Stupid Love. Drive, The Gangster Squad, Logan’s Run, The Ides of March, The Place Beyond The Pines), especially when you consider that he used to pick his parts very sparingly (he went from 2007’s Lars and The Real Girl to 2010’s Blue Valentine without working on acting projects), let’s hope the quality of his work doesn’t drop. He is in my opinion one of the very best actors of his generation and I would hate to see his standards drop at all.

New Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell film get’s a poster…..

Crazy, Stupi, Love get’s a new poster….

i hope that's Marisa Tomei's leg.....

It’s good to see Steve Carell will be playing against type as a down on his luck, lovelorn, uptight yet likable bloke….

I actually like Steve Carell, I think he puts in great performances in 40 year-old virgin, Dan in Real Life and Little Miss Sunshine and The US Office is very fuuny. Despite the fact it looks like a generic romcom/ rip off of Hitch (which sucked) I actually have kind of high hopes for this, I mean look at the cast!

Plus the trailer was suprisingly funny –

According to IMDB Crazy, Stupid, Love is due to hit the UK September 2

Captain America sequel in the works…..already?

Apparently so according to the guys over at ScreenJunkie…

According to the article over at screenjunkies.com the sequel is already in the works, the guys over there managed to ask Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markussome (the writers behind Captain America) some great questions (which i recommend you check out) at the panel for the LA Film Festival”Coffee Talk” series, with the most interesting part coming at the end

“ScreenJunkie: When would you be scheduled to work on a sequel?

Stephen Mcfeely: We’ve already made the deal so I was at Marvel last week. We’re talking and passing stuff back and forth all the time. They just sent me a big PDF file of comics.”

So it looks as though plans for the sequel have alreayd gotten under way, this is a smart move in my view that way if it’s successful they won’t have to rush out a sequel they can take their time as they will already be prepared.

Speaking of Cap there is a great featurette for the new film doing the rounds online called “Behind the Shield” which you can watch below –

Captain America is at a cinema near you July 22
